Where Freedom Camping Is Allowed
Rules in Mount Cook / Aoraki area are set by Mackenzie District Council and DOC. Check their current bylaws and maps for designated areas, time limits, and any bans. DOC campsites and freedom camping may also apply. Always verify before you stay — councils change rules and signage.
Certified Self-Contained Requirements

Common Pitfalls and Fines
Freedom camping in a non-self-contained vehicle or in a prohibited area can result in infringement fines. Stay only where permitted, use dump stations for waste, and take rubbish away. Check Mackenzie District Council and DOC for current rules and fines.
Dump Stations, Toilets and Campsites
DOC and Mackenzie District govern the area. Freedom camping is limited; DOC campsites (e.g. White Horse Hill) are the main option. Check DOC for bookings and dump stations. Use CamperMate or Rankers and the council or DOC website for up-to-date locations. Never dump waste on the ground.
Best Alternatives
If freedom camping is restricted or full, use DOC campsites, holiday parks, or NZMCA parks (members). Book or check availability in peak season.
