DOC Campsites in New Zealand: Booking, Categories & Fees

Department of Conservation campsites: basic, standard, and serviced categories; how to book and what to expect.

DOC Camp Categories

Basic — often just a cleared area, toilet may be long-drop; low or no fee. Standard — toilet and water; moderate fee. Serviced — flush toilets, showers, kitchen, sometimes power; higher fee. Not all DOC sites are suitable for large motorhomes; check vehicle length and access.

Booking

Popular DOC campsites (especially in summer and in hotspots like Abel Tasman, Fiordland) can be booked online on the DOC website. Book ahead for peak periods. Some sites are first-come first-served; arrive early in busy seasons.

Fees

Fees vary by category and site. Basic often $0–$8 per person per night; standard and serviced more. DOC passes (e.g. annual) can reduce costs if you use DOC camps often. Check current fees on the DOC website.
