Rules First
Most of these spots require a self-contained vehicle with a current warrant (green or blue until 7 June 2026 — blue vs green self-containment). Respect freedom camping rules: no dumping waste, take rubbish, keep noise down. Councils change rules — always check current bylaws or use CamperMate / Rankers before you go.
North Island Favourites
Examples (verify before travel): Coromandel — several designated areas with limits. Bay of Plenty — some council-approved spots. Raglan — check Waikato rules. Wellington region — limited; many use campsites or NZMCA parks. Central North Island — DOC and council sites; check DOC website for status.
South Island Favourites
Examples: Marlborough / Nelson — various council and DOC spots. West Coast — some freedom camping; often wet, so good ventilation matters. Queenstown / Wanaka — strict bylaws; limited freedom camping, many use holiday parks. Fiordland — mainly DOC campsites; book in peak season. Always confirm current rules.
