Before opening listings, write down your total budget, repair reserve, travel dates, number of berths, and whether you need a current green self-containment warrant. Decide which requirements are essential and which are negotiable. This keeps an attractive fit-out or rushed sale from distracting you from mechanical condition, paperwork, and the way you will actually use the van.
What to Decide First
Budget: How much can you spend on the van plus rego, WOF, insurance, and running costs? Use case: Freedom camping, holiday parks, or both? If you want to freedom camp, you’ll need a self-contained vehicle with a current green warrant (blue warrants expired 7 June 2026). Size: Solo, couple, or family? That drives type and layout.
Where to Look

Inspection and Purchase
Always view in person. Get a pre-purchase inspection from a mechanic or specialist, especially for older or high-mileage vans. When you buy, complete the ownership transfer (MR13A) and update insurance straight away.
