Campervan Costs in New Zealand: Purchase Prices & Running Costs

Realistic campervan prices and running costs in New Zealand: purchase brackets, rego, WOF, insurance, servicing, and fuel.

Purchase Price Brackets

Rough guides from current market listings (prices vary): Under $15k — older, often non-self-contained HiAce-style vans. $15k–$35k — good mix of green self-contained pop-tops and smaller motorhomes. $35k–$60k+ — newer, larger or well-built self-contained vans and motorhomes. Japanese imports can offer value but check compliance and history.

Registration and WOF

Registration (rego) must be current (paid in 3, 6, or 12-month blocks). WOF is required every 6 or 12 months depending on vehicle age/type. Budget roughly $100–$200 per year for rego and $50–$70 per WOF.

Insurance and Servicing

Third-party or full insurance is recommended; premiums depend on value, use, and driver. Servicing (oil, filters, brakes, tyres) typically $300–$800+ per year depending on usage. See Servicing and Maintenance for a schedule.

Fuel

Diesel vans are common; expect roughly 10–14 L/100 km for mid-size vans. Petrol HiAce-sized vans often 12–16 L/100 km. Factor in current fuel prices for your travel plans.
