How to Transfer Campervan Ownership in New Zealand

Step-by-step guide to changing campervan or motorhome ownership in New Zealand using the MR13A form and NZTA.

The MR13A Form

In New Zealand, change of ownership is done using the MR13A (Application for transfer of registration). The seller fills in their section (name, signature, odometer, date of sale). The buyer fills in their details and submits the form to NZTA (online or via an NZTA agent). The seller can also initiate the transfer online if they have the buyer's details.

What You Need

Vehicle registration plate number, VIN (or chassis number), current odometer reading, seller's and buyer's full names and addresses, and the date of sale. The buyer pays the transfer fee. Ensure the seller has signed and completed their part before you pay.

After the Transfer

Once processed, you're the registered owner. Update insurance immediately. Check rego and WOF expiry and renew as needed. If the van is self-contained (green or blue warrant), the warrant stays with the vehicle until its expiry — then you must get it re-certified. See blue vs green self-containment (blue expires 7 June 2026).
