The Reality
Most designated freedom camping in New Zealand requires a self-contained vehicle with a current warrant (green or blue — blue expires 7 June 2026). Councils and DOC do this to protect the environment and manage waste. If your van is not self-contained, your options for free overnight stays are limited. Where Non-Self-Contained Might Be Allowed
Some areas have a small number of spots where non-self-contained vehicles are permitted — often where there are public toilets nearby and the council has explicitly allowed it. These are the exception, not the rule. Always check the current council bylaws and signage; don’t assume you can stay. Wrong assumptions lead to fines. Best Alternatives
DOC campsites — many have toilets and water; you don’t need to be self-contained. Holiday parks — powered and non-powered sites with full facilities. NZMCA parks — for members; some have facilities. Never Dump Waste Illegally
If you’re not self-contained, you must use public or campsite toilets and dispose of grey water at dump stations or designated facilities. Dumping waste on the ground or in waterways is illegal, harmful, and leads to bans and tighter rules for everyone. Do the right thing and use proper facilities or certified self-containment.
