Best Time of Year to Buy a Campervan in New Zealand

When to buy a campervan in NZ: peak selling season, quiet periods, and how timing affects choice and price.

Peak Selling Season

Listings tend to peak in spring and early summer (September–January) as people prepare for travel or sell before/after the holidays. More choice, but also more buyers and faster sales. If you’re buying then, be ready to move quickly and use alerts so you see new listings as they appear.

Quieter Periods

Autumn and winter (March–August) often have fewer new listings but less competition. Sellers who list then may be more motivated. You may get a better deal if you’re flexible on spec and can wait for the right van. Use Trade Me and Facebook groups and set up alerts so you don’t miss new ads.

Timing Tips

Buy when you’re ready to inspect and pay — don’t delay if you’ve found the right van. Factor in rego and WOF expiry; a van with long rego and fresh WOF is easier to budget for. If you need self-containment, check the warrant expiry (green or blue — blue expires 7 June 2026).
