Warrant of Fitness (WOF)
Your campervan must have a current safety inspection. Light vehicles use a WoF: vehicles first registered anywhere on or after 1 January 2000 receive a 12-month WoF, while most pre-2000 light vehicles receive a 6-month WoF. Light vintage and veteran vehicles over 40 years old moved to a 12-month WoF on 1 September 2025. Heavy vehicles use a CoF; eligible privately owned heavy motorhomes also moved to a 12-month CoF on 1 September 2025. NZTA has announced further light-vehicle inspection changes from 1 November 2026, so check its current WoF guidance. Driving without the required current inspection is illegal and may affect insurance cover.
Registration (Rego)
Your vehicle licence, commonly called rego, must be current. You can renew for up to 12 months or choose a specific expiry date. Fees depend on the recorded vehicle class, fuel and weight. If rego expires, the vehicle cannot legally be used on the road until it is renewed. NZTA requires the current licence label to be displayed on the left-hand side of the windscreen.
Current Costs
Use NZTA's rego fee table and plate-specific fee checker because the amount depends on how the van is recorded. For licences starting after 1 July 2026, a standard private passenger vehicle is listed at $181.45 for 12 months if petrol and $248.83 if diesel or electric; goods vans and heavier vehicles have different rates. Inspection providers set their own WoF or CoF prices. Budget for both in your running costs.
