WOF and Rego for Campervans in New Zealand

Warrant of Fitness (WOF) and registration (rego) requirements for campervans and motorhomes in New Zealand.

Warrant of Fitness (WOF)

Your campervan must have a current WOF. For most light vehicles (under 3,500 kg), if first registered in NZ on or after 1 January 2000, the WOF is annual. Older vehicles or those over 3,500 kg often require a 6-monthly WOF. A WOF check typically costs around $50–$70. Drive with an expired WOF and you risk a fine and your insurance may be void.

Registration (Rego)

Registration must be current. You can pay in 3, 6, or 12-month blocks. Fees depend on vehicle type (petrol/diesel, weight). If rego lapses, the vehicle can't legally be driven until it’s renewed. Display the current licence label (or use digital proof if applicable).

Rough Costs

Rego: roughly $100–$200+ per year depending on vehicle. WOF: $50–$70 per check. Budget for both in your running costs.
