Campervan vs Motorhome vs Caravan in New Zealand: Which to Choose

Difference between campervans, motorhomes, and caravans in NZ: size, licence requirements, towing, and pros and cons for Kiwi buyers.

What’s the Difference?

A campervan is typically a van-based conversion (e.g. Toyota HiAce, Nissan Caravan) — drive and live in the same unit; often under 3,500 kg. A motorhome is a larger, coach-built or bus-style vehicle with the same idea (drive + live); often over 3,500 kg and may need a Class 2 licence. A caravan is towed by another vehicle; you need a tow vehicle and a licence that allows towing for its weight.

Licence and Weight

In NZ, most campervans under 3,500 kg (and under 4,500 kg laden for towing a light trailer) can be driven on a Class 1 (car) licence. Heavier motorhomes may require Class 2. Caravans are limited by your vehicle’s towing capacity and your licence. Check driver licence for campervans and NZTA for current rules.

Pros and Cons

Campervan: Compact, easy to park, often cheaper to run and buy; good for narrow roads and freedom camping. Motorhome: More space and comfort; higher cost, fuel, and sometimes licence. Caravan: You can leave it on site and use the car; need to store and tow; ferry costs for both. Choose based on how you’ll use it and your budget.
