Driver Licence for Campervans in New Zealand: Class 1 vs Class 2

What licence you need to drive a campervan or motorhome in NZ: Class 1 (car) for most vans under 3,500 kg, Class 2 for heavier vehicles, and towing rules.

Class 1 (Car Licence)

In New Zealand, a Class 1 (car) licence lets you drive vehicles with a gross vehicle mass (GVM) of 3,500 kg or less. Most campervans (e.g. Toyota HiAce, Nissan Caravan, many converted vans) are under this limit. You can also tow a trailer up to 2,500 kg laden (with some conditions). If your campervan is under 3,500 kg GVM, you’re fine on a Class 1.

Class 2 (Heavy Vehicles)

Larger motorhomes and buses over 3,500 kg GVM typically require a Class 2 licence (or the appropriate heavy vehicle class). Check your vehicle’s GVM on the rego or plate. If you’re buying a big motorhome, confirm the weight and your licence before you buy. NZTA has the full licence types.

Towing a Caravan or Trailer

With a Class 1 licence you can tow a trailer (e.g. caravan) up to 2,500 kg laden behind a vehicle that doesn’t exceed 3,500 kg GVM. Heavier combinations may need a different class. Check NZTA for current towing and combination rules. See campervan vs motorhome vs caravan for vehicle types.

Overseas Licence Holders

Visitors can drive on a valid overseas licence for up to 12 months (or as per your visa). The vehicle class must match — e.g. if your overseas licence is equivalent to a car licence, you’re limited to vehicles you could drive on a NZ Class 1. Check NZTA visiting NZ for details.
