Class 1 (Car Licence)
A full Class 1 licence lets you drive a rigid vehicle with a gross laden weight (GLW) of up to 6,000 kg. Class 1 learner and restricted licences generally cover a vehicle or combination up to 4,500 kg. They have a specific motorhome allowance: a motorhome may have a GLW up to 6,000 kg provided its actual on-road weight is no more than 4,500 kg. Most Toyota HiAce, Nissan Caravan, and similar van conversions sit comfortably within Class 1, but check the vehicle's recorded GLW and its loaded on-road weight.
Class 2 (Heavy Vehicles)
A rigid vehicle with a GLW from 6,001 to 18,000 kg is generally Class 2. A motorhome above the applicable Class 1 limit therefore needs the appropriate heavy-vehicle licence. Check the vehicle's GLW and actual loaded weight before buying or driving it. NZTA's licence class table is the source of truth.
Towing a Caravan or Trailer
Licence class depends on the gross combined weight (GCW) of the towing vehicle and trailer, not just the trailer's weight. A full Class 1 licence covers a combination vehicle up to 6,000 kg GCW; learner and restricted Class 1 licences generally cap the combination at 4,500 kg GCW. Check both vehicles' ratings, actual loading, tow-bar limits, and NZTA's current class table. See campervan vs motorhome vs caravan for vehicle types.
Overseas Licence Holders
A visitor can currently drive on a valid overseas car licence for up to 18 months from their latest arrival in New Zealand; overseas motorcycle and truck licences have a 12-month limit. You may only drive the classes allowed by your overseas licence, subject to New Zealand weight limits. If the licence is not in English, carry an approved translation or international driving permit as well as the original licence. Check NZTA's current visitor rules before driving.
