Travelling with Pets in a Campervan in New Zealand

Taking dogs or cats in a campervan in NZ: council and DOC rules, freedom camping with pets, and practical tips.

Council and DOC Rules

Many freedom camping areas and DOC sites have rules about dogs — often no dogs, or dogs on lead only, or banned in conservation areas. Councils vary; check the bylaws and signage before you stay. Cats are often not allowed in DOC areas. See freedom camping by region and DOC/council websites for each area. Don’t assume pets are allowed.

Where Pets Are Allowed

Some council freedom camping areas allow dogs on leads; others don’t. Holiday parks often allow dogs (sometimes in designated areas or for a fee). NZMCA parks — check each park’s rules. Always pick up waste and keep dogs under control. Respect “no dogs” areas — they exist for wildlife and other users.

Practical Tips

Keep your pet secure while driving. Don’t leave pets alone in the van in hot weather. Ensure they have water and shade. Plan your route around pet-friendly stops and have a backup (e.g. holiday park) when freedom camping doesn’t allow dogs. See holiday parks and freedom camping rules.
