Internet and Connectivity When Travelling in a Campervan in New Zealand

Staying connected in a campervan in NZ: mobile data, Starlink, WiFi, and working remotely on the road.

Mobile Data

4G/5G coverage is good in towns and many highways; patchy in remote areas (e.g. Fiordland, some backcountry). Different networks (Spark, Vodafone, 2degrees) have different coverage — check coverage maps. Prepaid or plan SIMs are easy to buy. A mobile hotspot or phone tethering can share data to laptops and tablets. Useful for email, maps, and light work.

WiFi and Cafes

Holiday parks often have WiFi (quality varies). Cafes and libraries in towns offer WiFi for customers or visitors. Don’t rely on free WiFi for sensitive work — use a VPN if needed. Plan big uploads/downloads for when you have good coverage or power.

Power for Devices

Charging phones and laptops uses 12V or inverter power. See solar and power — if you’re working remotely, size your battery and solar (or use powered sites) so you don’t run out. Conserve data and battery when off-grid.
